| well its that time for me tomorrow, thought that we could get a check list together to help people out when getting ready for there's! i'll start with a few basics but feel free to add anything ive missed! 1. check all lights, indicator's,brakes, reverse etc etc! 2. make sure the wiper blades are working, and washer jets are aimed correctly and working well! 3.check all tyre's,10p test is best way, stick a 10p piece in the grooves and if it stays in then theres a fair bit of tread! also check for un-even wear, we roll low and cambered so worth checking! 4. check brakes, make sure the discs n pads have plenty of miles left on them! 5.jack up ur car at the front and check all the suspension bushes for wear n tear! if u can jack the whole front end up,rock steering and make sure its all working ok!no un-healthy knocks or rattle's! 6.check for rust under the car, sills, seatbelt mountings, suspension mounts etc etc! 7..... ok im stuck now so copy n paste this and add ure info! cheerz ross | |

| I found this on another forum and thought i would share it.
Vehicle identification number - a vehicle identification number must be permanently displayed and legible on a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1980
Registration plate - condition, security, legibility and format of letters/numbers
Lights - condition, operation, security and correct colour. The headlamps will also be checked to see if the aim is correct
Steering and suspension - correct condition and operation
Wipers and washers - operate to give the driver a clear view of the road
Windscreen - condition and drivers view of the road
Horn - correct operation and type
Seatbelts - all seatbelts installed are checked for type, condition, operation and security. All compulsory seatbelts must be in place
Seats - front seats secure. Front and rear backseats can be secured in the upright position
Fuel system - no leaks, fuel cap fastens correctly and seals securely. The fuel cap will need to be opened. Make sure the key is available
Exhaust emissions - vehicle meets the requirement for exhaust emission. These vary on the age and fuel type of the vehicle
Exhaust system - complete, secure, without serious leaks and silences effectively
Vehicle structure - free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas. No sharp edges
Doors - open and close. Latch securely in closed position. Front doors should open from inside and outside the vehicle. Rear doors may need to be opened to gain access to testable items
Mirrors - presence, condition and security
Wheels and tyres - condition, security, tyre size and type, and tread depth. Spare tyres are not tested
Brakes - condition, operation and performance (efficiency test). Suitable vehicles will be tested on a roller brake tester. Vehicles such as those with permanent 4-wheel drive will be tested either on a suitable road using a properly calibrated and maintained decelerometer or, if one is installed at the test station, a plate brake tester

| Bit of brake help...
Check steel brake pipes for serious any signs of rusting and also check the steel ferrules on the rubber flexi hoses at the same time. Bit of a grey area with some testers who will fail them even tho they are still ok. Its a common way for stations which look for work to get some repair work lol! I clean mine up and give them a greasing once a year, aerosol copper grease is good for this.
While you are down there (lol) check that the rubber flexi hoses aren't cracking up. Check the handbrake doesn't come up to far when used and check the cables for fraying.
Check your discs aren't scored, rusty, cracking, warped or worn pieces of sh*t (i see loads of these....) and check there's life left in the pads. If you ned to replace anything do both sides, no one likes to find dykes when they brake and don't forget to wipe the oil from the new discs with a solvent.
As for drums make sure there's no signs of fluid running done the backplate. If there is pull your drum off and replace the cylinder. If the shoes are contaminated do your self a favour and fit new ones to both sides. Check these no lip on the drums.
Make sure your brakes don't bind or judder. Your ABS light should go out in the correct time period, usualy 3 seconds. If it don't fix it or get it fixed. DON'T just remove the bulb it WILL fail for not working correctly.
Inrestingly the Air bag light doesn't matter, you'll just get an advisory for it being on... wierd that....

| Oh and clean your car inside and out, no MOT tester likes wading through crap and they can refuse to test it if its too dirty in their opinion. Don't take your van in with the back full of stuff. | |
