power steering belt mk2 gti 1991 HELP!

would any body be able to help, trying to fit new power steering belt but cant get the pump to move. i've got haynes manual but thats a bit crap it just says to loosen pump retaining bolts then it will swivel to adjust the belt. done all that but the fecker still wont move , any help would be great, thanks!

try some elbow grease, can get it from halfords i think tee hee

Right mate.

1. If I remember there are two (maybe three) 13mm head bolts that hold the pump to its bracket, loosen these and then try the longer 13mm head bolt that adjusts the tension of the belt.

2. You should notice that the pump will move tightening or slackening the belt depending which way you turn it.

3. Slacken it off, remove your belt, fit new one and tension it up. You are looking for around a 1/4 of an inch free play on the belt in the centre of its longest run.

4. Once your happy tighten the securing bolts, road test and re-check your tension.

5. Should be job done, have a brew!

EDIT - Later cars may use a cogged adjuster like the alternator. It will have a 13mm head bolt to secure it and uses a 22mm to adjust. Slacken the 13mm and turn the 22mm adjuster either way to tighten or slacken the belt. Basically replaces the tensioner bolt in step 1, all the rest is the same I believe.

thanks guys done now was missing a bolt behind the pulley, thanks for help tom, only wanted to put belt on and look at all the trouble its caused!!
