Dunno about taking the air filter off, but Mk3 Golfs apparently have a habit of the fuel pump relay throwing a wobbly (dunno which one it is either - never had a Mk3!).

Yeah i suggested the relay, Thats my first port of call when i have a look on sunday.

If not it could be the actual pump, as they do tend to be crap.

other than that it could be over fueling. hence running better with otu the box.

Jon.

If you think 10months is long hows 15 years sound! I got a mini that was laid up for that amount of time and besides putting fresh fuel in it and cleaning the points it fire straight up! It the best 998cc lump I've ever had! The meth caddy was stood 4 years and cracked straight up without touching it bar changing the battery and slapping the starter! Being stood don't kill engines, thrashing from cold, lax maintenance, poor/incorrect oil and over revving kills em! If you are gonna stand an engine, remove the plugs and put redex down each plug hole and wind it over by hand each year, just replace the plugs once you've done it. You can even et proper laying up oil but dont run an engine with it in! Oh and don't drain the cooling system, fill it with et anti-freeze, stops the waterways corroding up etc.

Oh forgot to say have you check that the air filter or any piping to it isn't blocked, the fuel feed and return pipes aren't blocked and that its getting a good spark? I'd also check the crank/cam/hall sensor depending what its got. If its got fuel, air and a spark it should go.
