my 1988 polo c cuts out

alrite lads someone help.... after a faultless trip frm lincoln to the coast to see slim-vw my polo aquired a little problem wiv stalling when i was approaching junctions....now i tried shiftin it to neutral then brakin to see if it was clutch related still stalled.....doesnt do it everytime but is a problem....i have the 1043cc carb engine totally original ....any clues in the rite direction will be aprrecited ladz

Check the idle speed is correct, dirty air filter , air leak. May be worth getting it set up.

i reckon its gotta be either the idle like u said yesterday so maybe have a tweak of that,or its been sat sooooo long that when u drove it over u dislodged some crap somewhere in the fuel line and its clogging the carb?!did it still do it on the way home after it was properly warmed up? get something to clear the fuel line,redex do a carb treatment,maybe thats a cheap option to try out. im sure royston had a problem with his but after a while it seemed to sort itself,which is why i think it could be a gunk build up stopping the fuel going thru the jets maybe when theres no pressure to force it thru,like when ur pulling up to a junction! i dunno tho but it just seems weird since it only happened yesterday after u filled up,maybe a bit of rust in the fuel tank has come away,not gonna take much,bit of grit can clog a jet.

I'm guessing its gonna be the Pierberg carb fitted which are a bit of an arse at the best of times.

As slim and falconer have said check your air filter, fuel lines, check for air leaks as these have loads of vacuum pipes and I'd stick a new fuel filter on as they are less than a quid. If there all good adjust the idle speed if its a little slow, there is a little plastic knob on the vac unit iirc, give it a little turn and it should idle better.
