| theres good news and bad news, everything GTI is in bar the driveshafts, and the car is all back together apart from the interior. Bad news is the fuel pump doesn't hum when I turn the ignition on, and it won't start. Seems to turn over fine, but no fuel. I've fitted the rear loom from the donor which includes both fuel pump, rear lights and handbrake light switch. There seems to be a bit of detachable loom that goes from the lift pump to the main pump, that I lost when removing it, so I made my own bit to connect the main pump to the main harness, which seems to be OK and connected well. (then I found the bit of offending wiring!)
Theres one or 2 plugs behind the fusebox which don't seem to have a home, so I'm a bit stuck really

| Right after a lot of ballache I've put the gti interior loom and mfa stalks in now, so it "should" all be plug and play and I've done away with all that clifford stuff that was just causing more headaches. But it isn't. Now its got more problems, ignition stays on after being turned off. Fuel pump now stays on constantly even though the relay is OK (I tried another), so it looks like it might have to go to an auto electrician to finish the job off | |

| have you put the donor fuse box in too?? digiphant fuse boxes are needed for any efi conversion as the old fuse box in the early golf was only for carb or mechanical fuel injection?? i know theres some difference as when i considered doing a vr6 swap into a digi mk2 i was told it was all plug n play, yet if it was a pre 88 it would be a right twat.....

| both cars are pre 90 spec, and the fuseboxes are identical, just an extra relay needed. All sorted now, got an auto electrician out to it, turns out my ECU is cooked due to either a bad chassis earth or from when it fell off my toolbox! Got one off jacko tonight, so hopefully tomorrow is the day it finally fires up! He also found a pin in the dizzy was broken, so I'l get a new dizzy and rotor arm also. If it doesn't fire up tomorrow I'l either kick the sh*t out of it or sell the whole lot and get an early 5door gti! | |

| I got another ECU that didn't work, either it was duff or my car ruined it, but I can't see anything wrong inside, whereas my original one was burnt out inside. After many posts on the mk2 owners forum I've found that the most likely cause was the earth strap from the coil to the rocker cover, apparently its caused a few other people ECUs to die. I've got another one on its way, should be here early next week. I'm gonna triple check every earth to make sure I don't cook another ECU, and hope and prey that it'l fire up!
Not heard anything from him about the steering rack, and someone else wants it and a few other bits and he's coming tomorrow tea time, so he might have missed out on it

| Today I finished stripping the donor car so it can go to car heaven tomorrow, the rear beam is off and waiting to go on when I can be bothered, I'l swap the master cylinder to the new 16v item I have at the same time. Checked all my earths, put a second earth from the battery to the chassis, also a second one from the coil to rocker cover, and one from the ecu (where it bolts to the bulkhead) to the bonnet hinge, so when this other ECU turns up hopefully it'l just work this time! Also went to fill it up with coolant and it came straight out of the oil cooler, found one of the outlets on the casting has corroded badly and snapped off! So I'm going to have to rob the oil cooler off my spare engine. Also when bolting up my pedal box to the servo my throttle cable has frayed badly and is hanging on by one strand! It is the one from the carb engine so I guess its maybe too short and has stretched, so I'l put the one off the donor car on it. Nothing but problem after problem!

| Good news;
New ECU come today, and after fitting the oil cooler from the other engine and the gti throttle cable, it fired up!! Sounds awesome I have to say.
Bad news;
I have no drive! It goes into all gears but nothing, The gear selector on the gearbox is working, but still absolutely nothing! Engine doesn't seem affected by it being in gear, its like one driveshaft is turning and the other isnt, but theyre both bolted up to the gearbox and the hubs, so this can't be it! Any ideas?

| I can't see how the clutch would affect it not driving, its selecting all gears fine, and feels fine on the pedal | |
